Welcome Spring and Summer!

We hope everyone had a fun winter playing out in the park with your canine kids.
What a memory it must seem right now with the weather we've been having. Hopefully it continues, with a normal amount of rain as well thrown in for good measure.

Kings Park Dog Association had sent out an email asking for input on the City's Off Leash Master Plan. Did you have a chance to go through the newsletter and fill out the survey?
Here is the link to the Off Leash Areas Master Plan.

We have witnessed the transformation of the old waterfall into something fabulous that will be around for many years to come. The parks employees have been busy making changes to the waterfall area. What does everyone think?

We noticed that the park has been kept fairly clean this Spring - due to owners cleaning up after their dogs and using the bag dispensers.

We Need Your Bags!

If you haven't had a chance, please try to save your veggie bags from the store and next time you come to the park, insert them into the dispensers.
There are seven placed at different areas around the perimeter and on the walking paths.

This is a life saver for the regulars who attend, and it is always appreciated!

If you happen to see any one of us in the park, please don't hesitate to say hello.
It seems I always remember the dogs and dog names but not the owners. That's my story anyway. This is me (Jeanette) and my sheltie Lacey, we go as often as we can - you can often see her sprinting through the park to catch a ball, chase down a jet, or rolling in the grass. Once the summer months come, we try to stay out of the heat of the daytime. She's definitely a snow loving dog!

We hope everyone has an enjoyable, fun and safe and relaxing summer!

We Are Back - Kings Park Dog Association

Hello, and welcome back to our blog. Yes, its been awhile.

Recently, as all of you know, The City of Winnipeg has introduced a Master Plan relating to all of the off leash space in the city. This plan will implement what lands get protected in the future, establish guidelines, develop and solve maintenance issues to name a few.

On the City of Winnipeg's website, there are Public Engagement Workshops, booths, and online surveys available this summer. Here is the link:
http://winnipeg.ca/ppd/PublicEngagement/OffLeashAreas/default.stm

I emailed the contact, and she replied saying there's been internal delays and these surveys and workshops won't happen until the fall. If anyone else knows anything else, please don't hesitate to email us at: kingsparkdogs@gmail.com. Please consider being involved in this project as it is really important to voice your opinion on the off lease space, namely preserving what we already have but enhancing it for future generations.

The contact for the city is:

Brittany Shewchuk, Public Engagement Lead
Phone: 204-943-3178
Email: shewchukb@mmm.ca

Our nifty little bag dispensers are now brightly painted and labelled for use. Please use as needed and if you have any extra bags for them, placing a few in them would be wonderful too!
Once these dispensers were utilized, people have commented and noticed how much cleaner the park now is because of them. Keep up the great work!

On April 4th, councillor Janice Lukes held an open house was held at the Pembina Trails Library to discuss opportunities for additional initiatives such as fencing for the "Fields for Fido" off leash park in King's Park. About 20 citizens attended and there was good discussion on the topic. The majority of the people who attended expressed concerns about fencing the perimeter of the off leash area. Some of the concerns expressed were: High cost of fencing, the impact on the character of the park, the impact on the movement of the wild animals, and the opportunity cost of using the funds for fencing. Items such as trees and benches, fixing the fountain, pond and replacing or repairing the bridges were viewed as the priority.

The park's trees were filling in so nicely in May. Now most of the paths are almost dark and jungle-like now, but still beautiful nonetheless. As long as we don't meet grandfather skunk who has made an appearance in recent years!

At the end of June, we received an email from Councillor Janice Lukes about some updates to the park. She would like to meet at some point to figure out where trees should be planted.
Once we receive a definite date from her, we will let our members know and hopefully you can attend and have an input!

Here is a link to her update:

Here are some more recent pictures from a beautiful sunny evening in early July.

Beautiful sunny evening at the park (early July)

We hope you continue to have a safe, restful and enjoyable summer.
We are very much looking forward to a revitalized park in the next few years!

Welcome to the King's Park Dog Blog

Hello and welcome! We can’t wait to show everyone what a wonderful park we have here in Winnipeg!
A lot of us have been going to King's Park for years, and we are so proud of this open area for our canine kids and buddies.
We are so glad to have this snow melting away and then enjoy a nice summer filled with fun, friends and laughter (at our dogs).
A BRIEF HISTORY
In 2008, Betty Braaksma started the original dog blog. Since she has now moved to Brandon, the rest of the members have moved forward. We also received a small monetary amount from the city and now have installed these cute little bag dispensers in all corners of the park and at the entrances.

Thank you Ray for your expertise and handy work in making these and Marilyn, Mary Ann and Nevin for making sure the dispensers have always been filled. Also, thank you to everyone who donates bags to the cause!
We know they're being used! Thank you!

Thank you Remon Yang at CIBC for helping us set up our bank account. We appreciate it.

As for the future, we'll have regular updates, some features on our furry children, and hopefully (maybe) a get together for members and friends might be in the works. To the regular members whose emails we already have, please pass on our blog address to other park attendees so we can further the exposure of this beautiful park.
